DeWalta

DeWalta is the musical alias of David Koch, a German producer, DJ and multi-instrumentalist whose work connects jazz improvisation with the rhythmic possibilities of electronic music. Across his records and performances, intricate percussion, deep bass and expressive synthesizer work form a sound rooted in house and techno, with room for experimentation, atmosphere and surprise.

Raised in a musical family in southern Germany, David began with French horn before taking up saxophone and pursuing studies at Berlin’s Hanns Eisler music conservatory. Early experiences in orchestras, jazz ensembles and jam sessions shaped his approach to listening and playing. In Berlin, these foundations met a growing fascination with records, synthesizers and studio production. The DeWalta name carries a personal connection to that history: a tribute to his grandfather Walter, whose jazz collection was an early influence.

In 2007, he co-founded Meander, creating an independent home for his own productions and a circle of like-minded artists. Alongside releases on Vakant, Cynosure, Haunt and Amphia, projects including Wander, Illumination, Dark Matter and Lyra trace his explorations of rhythm, space and sound. The ambient works of Lyra Pi extend those interests beyond the dancefloor.

His international performances span intimate clubs and festival stages. A longstanding connection with Berlin’s Club der Visionaere sits alongside appearances at venues including Panorama Bar, Amnesia and WOMB. With Canadian producer Mike Shannon, he developed DeWalta & Shannon, a live collaboration combining saxophone, modular synthesis and drum machines through spontaneous musical exchange.

Alongside his own releases and performances, David works as an audio engineer and educator, offering mixing, mastering, production and private tuition. He has delivered an estimated 730 mixing and mastering services through online bookings and directly commissioned work. Since launching his online academy in 2020, he has taught more than 230 students through over 950 teaching hours. His teaching and engineering work connects him with students and clients across more than 48 countries worldwide, from Europe and the Americas to Asia, the Middle East and Australia.

The studio brings these different strands together: the ear of an instrumentalist, the experience of a producer and DJ, and a lasting curiosity about how sound is made.
